Call for Latino Photographers, Writers and Health Advocates

LHAL Pittsburgh - Latino Health Advocacy & Leadership
Latino Photovoices Project

The Pittsburgh Latino Health Advocacy and Leadership Program (LHAL) is using a technique known in public health as "Photovoices" to capture community themes and strengths using photographic images as just one element of its assessment of Latino health in the Greater Pittsburgh area. LHAL plans to mount an exhibit this Fall of these images accompanied by four (4) special lectures, one each week of the exhibit, to increase awareness and support for public health, medical providers and policy-makers of the Latino culture and its health.

In addition to photographers, we are looking for individuals who enjoy writing as well as those who are interested in policy, system change and communication to help us with this project.

Each Latino will join 2-3 other Latinos or Latino health supporters in a team which will focus on one of the following five (5) themes:
+ Identity
+ Access to Care
+ Culture
+ Health Beliefs
+ "Where we are, where we're going"

An artist member from Pittsburgh Filmmakers or a local photographer will assist each team from July through mid-October for this project. Theme teams will supply their own digital or regular film camera. All photographers will need to give consent to LHAL, as represented by Health Equity Associates,LLC, to reproduce images in policy papers, articles, web pages, and mount exhibit in spaces other than PF after its debut at PF, all with proper attribution to the artist/photographer, original exhibit and funders/partners.

We are very pleased to announce that the lead artist for project is Maritza Mosquera from Ecuador, a Pittsburgh based, nationally recognized artist for her work in dialogue aimed at combating racism using images and thoughtful processes! She will be assisted by Fiona Wilson, a promising young Latina graduate of Carnegie Mellon University's Fine Arts program.

An organizational meeting on Latino Photovoices will be held on Saturday,
July 9 from 10am - 2pm at a site to be determined.

It is very important that you contact Maritza Mosquera, the lead for this project, to let her know you plan to attend this initial meeting of the Photovoices Project!!

Please contact Maritza at 412-877-9332 or email her at mosqueram@warhol.org
