Pittsburgh Latino Health Advocacy and Leadership Program (LHAL)
The Pittsburgh Latino Health Advocacy and Leadership Program (LHAL) is a partnership including the American Cancer Society, Allegheny County Health Department, Area Agency on Aging-Allegheny County, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, Hilltop Community Health Center, Hispanic Center, Latin American Cultural Union, Latino Catholic Community, Latino Roundtable, Living Beyond Breast Cancer, Magee Women's Hospital, UPMC Health System, University of Pittsburgh, National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service-Atlantic Region, Pennsylvania Department of Health, Pittsburgh Venezuelan Association, Students And Latinos United Against Disparities (SALUD, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Student Group), Southwest Area Health Education Center, and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
The partnership works to offer health education, health screening, and health promotion programs throughout the Latino community and develop community leadership on health issues.
Specific partnership programs include:
• Community Health Assessment using the MAPP (Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Policy), a nationally recognized public health assessment process.
• Latino Photovoices is a collaboration between LHAL and Pittsburgh Filmmakers. Four to five teams of 3-4 individuals use still and video images along with words (recorded and written) to capture essential aspects of our Western Pennsylvania Latino community.
• Día de la Mujer Latina® is a culturally appropriate Latino family health festival, which incorporates music, food, games, children's activities with clinical screenings and health education.
• Pasión para el Corazón is a pilot Latino heart health screening events being conducted in Pennsylvania and including the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the American Heart Association.
• Expansion of access to clinical services is a key focus for LHAL. Agreement in principle has been reached with key clinical partners to offer a medical home to individuals visiting free clinics in as seamless a fashion possible.
• Celebramos el Mañana: Latinas que Sobreviven el Cáncer del Seno (We Celebrate Tomorrow: Latinas Living Beyond Breast Cancer) is a partnership between LHAL and Living Beyond Breast Cancer to disseminate bilingual educational materials for Latinas affected by breast cancer, their families and healthcare providers, and stimulate the formation of Latino cancer survivor support groups in this region.

We are open to organizations and individuals who are concerned about Latino Health issues and want to join a participatory community focused on ADVOCACY and LEADERSHIP, as well as ACTION.
